Potentially portable latency is variable depending on hardware.PS1 is the most straightforward. This also required finding physical game discs which is possible but somewhat expensive. In order to get the best experience it requires an incredibly complicated method of ripping BIOS from a PS1 (although there is a 'good enough' bios for epsxe now). Not sure about input lag or anything like that. (PC or Mobile?)PS3?PSV/PSTV?PS1?PS2?Other?Some thoughts on each.Emulation is probably the most difficult but looks the best in final output (assuming the chosen game works). Been looking at some PS1 classics recently and was wondering what you guys considered the best way to experience the systems library?PossibilitiesEmulation? And the difficulty of finding an unmolested, non-greasy PS1/PS2 controller.

Problems include dead memory cards (I had a huge third party one die on me just before I got my PS3 to copy them.) and disk scratches though. Since a lot of stuff is prerendered or super low res it often doesn't matter too much if you just go and use a real console instead of emulating. If it's no financial burden, you can be sure the original games run as intended on a nice CRT and original hardware.

I recall Silent Hill working quite well, but anything with 2D sprites or a HUD can go to shit the moment you apply AA or non-native resolution, it's hit or miss.Īnd emulation can't fix the lack of a Z buffer so you still get wobbly polygons. Any 2D elements will probably look like shit. FPSE worked fine for Legend of Legaia at the least.Don't assume emulated games look better, lol.

I use FPSE on Android and it.doesn't suck, unlike ePSXe and its plugin ridden hellscape.

Most games won't suffer much from emulation or timing issues, and almost all games are going to be much cheaper and easier to find that way. Also I'm not sure what the best emulator is on PC anymore. Personally I think in 95% of cases, if a game is on PSN and you do not already own it, you should just buy it on PSN and play it that way. Games look fine IMO on all 3, just don't stretch or zoom, use 'normal' in the scaling options.

Vita will have the least input lag I believe since your TV isn't involved and I don't think the Vita has input lag itself. Most games you won't notice but you might want to be more picky if you're looking at shmups or anything very timing dependent or performance-focused.In my experience, PS3 PS TV and Vita are all about the same. But I beat Mega Man X4 on PS3 so it can't be TOO horrible. I would generally just recommend whatever is easiest/cheapest for you since for most games and gamers minor timing issues aren't a huge deal, and that's the biggest problem with using the PS3. Can't comment on the current situation, though savestates were a godsent. Playing PS1 games on the other Sony platforms doesn't really work for me, got other games I'd rather play on them and the older graphics look better on a smaller screen. No experience with emulation besides ePSXe on PC a few years ago, and that was very hit-and-miss back then. Never noticed latency but with that genre it's not really a problem if it does happen, and playing on the go / suspending at any time is a big factor for me. I'll vouch for the PSV as the way to go in this case, though the PS1 games I still play are mostly RPGs. IQ is good and it's potentially portable. Not sure about IQ or Latency compared to the PS1/2PSV/PSTV this doesn't play discs but has access to a fairly robust digital catalog and doesn't require a separate memory card. It also has access to a fairly robust PS1 classics digital catalog and doesn't require a memory card.

Not sure about latencyPS3 can actually play PS1 discs I have no idea how they look though. Has some basic smoothing options to increase IQ. Has the original controller response time.PS2 required memory card and discs is as easy as to use/setup as the PS1. However it requires a memory card and finding the original discs also has the worst visual output that I'm aware of.
